Advocating for the Latino Student

Course #: EDUC_719T

Semester Credits: 3
Cost: $420.00

This course addresses the challenges and the opportunities of educating the linguistically and culturally diverse growing population of Latino students. Through a research-based lens, students will gain an understanding of culture and how it influences the school setting, particularly for Latino children and adolescent learners who may typically be characterized as “at risk”. Focusing on favorable (asset-based) linguistic, cognitive, educational, and cultural assets, students will discover how enhancing cross-cultural communication, and increasing parent involvement help teachers develop methods for effective teaching. Students will also discover how personal culture and life experiences influence their expectations for academic learning. Topics of cultural competence, culturally responsive teaching practices, dual language learners, advocacy, and parent involvement will be emphasized.
