North Korea: Understanding the Isolated Republic

Course #: EDUC_717G

Semester Credits: 3
Cost: $375.00

"Machiavellian Masters" and "Living Political Fossil" are two phrases that best describe North Korea. This is because it is one of the most opaque police states where its people cope under very poor, oppressive conditions; and yet for decades, survive against all odds. Through this course, gain a clear understanding about North Korea by studying its past, present, and future. This includes its history, leadership skills, and masterful survival techniques. Learn about how North Korean leaders, with its nation's stunted normalcy, limited resources, zombie-like economy, and outdated technology, cling to its existence and endures. This is largely accomplished by utilizing masterful Machiavellian techniques that include diplomatic nuclear threats in order to extract support from willing neighbors. However, even with these skillful political practices (that have been successful for decades), one can argue that this cunning technique cannot continue forever; and that in the long run, with or without massive reform, the regime is unsustainable. With this idea in mind, there are a number of hypotheses involved concerning its future and each is analyzed at length.

As a teacher, educational consultant, or other professional, you will learn about North Korea's many facets by studying its history, present day conditions, and theories about its future. A great deal of this information and insight is provided by Andrei Lankov, a Russian native who has lived in North Korea for many years, and has devoted his entire career to this isolated republic.
