Course Description

Depression, anxiety, bad moods, optimal mood states, their causes, and management strategies are discussed by the foremost authority on mood, Dr. Robert Thayer. Mood management and the relationship between energy, tension, mood, and tiredness are discussed. Alternatives to drugs, why depression and anxiety are more likely to occur at certain times, why diets are broken, biological influences on mood, and how we can achieve optimal mood states give the teacher insights into managing their own mood and understanding the mood states of their students.

Goals

  • Gain an understanding of what contributes to both good and bad moods.
  • Learn strategies for mood management.
  • Develop an understanding of energy, tension, and tense-tiredness relationships.
  • Learn techniques for recognizing mood states and mood antecedents in students.
  • Develop strategies for assessing causes of moods in others.

Evidence of Learning Outcomes

Upon completing Understanding Your Moods, the student will have demonstrated knowledge of the origins and causes of moods and ways to manage and recognize moods. It raises the awareness in the reader of the underlying biology of the daily cycles of energy and tension and offers recommendations for understanding and breaking self-destructive habits. With an understanding of the causes and methods for managing our moods, one can better survive the challenges of our modern, fast-paced lifestyle. The student will demonstrate synthesis and implementation skills by integrating information gained from readings and personal observation into a project designed to raise awareness of the relationships between mood, energy, tension, and tense tiredness.

How to Register

Registering for Understanding Your Moods is simple and can be done online or over the phone. Professional Development Courses at the University of La Verne are offered ongoing during three semesters, and you can start at any time. Students may choose to enroll in up to a maximum of 15 semester credits at any time during each enrollment period.

Fall: September 1 - January 31

Spring: February 1 - May 31

Summer: June 1 - August 31
