Course #: EDUC_716R

Semester Credits: 3
Cost: $420.00

This course is designed to take you on a journey through the life and work of the most noteworthy modern artists of the 20th and 21st century. This course is for both art teachers and teachers of other subjects who want to use art enhance learning in their students. With art disappearing in the schools, it is important to add art into other disciplines so that students receive worthwhile, exciting, and well-rounded educations, that follow State mandates. Art is often over-looked and treated as if it were superfluous, but hidden within it are ways to make a hard subject much more fun and memorable. If you are intimidated by art, become more aware and you will start to see more "art" around you in your everyday life. If you are an art teacher, you can use this course to not only add to your art knowledge base, but to provide your students with information that connects them to the other subjects they are currently being taught, such as history, math, writing, science, or other subjects.

This course presents basic and detailed information on the period called Modern Art, uses both biographical and art historical materials, and color reproductions of each artist's works. Students are taught the basics of art appreciation and how to apply a formal art analysis to artworks. Students are required to read two texts about recognized modern artists with descriptions of the artwork as well as how to appreciate even the most abstract works. Students will be asked to answer a series of questions about modern art and artists. Students will also be required to create a lesson plan that is either about Modern Art, uses of Modern Art to teach other subjects, or create a work of modern art.
