Frida Kahlo: Pain and Passion

Course Name: Frida Kahlo:Pain and Passion

Course Number: EDUC 712Q

Semester Credits: 3

Course Description

The life and paintings of Frida Kahlo represent one of the most fascinating episodes in the story of 20th Century art. She was the perfect romantic figure – a person who suffered greatly, died young, and spoke directly through her art to our fears of life and death. With strength and patient dedication, Frida created her own work and personal artistic and political presentation, distinct from the art movements of her time. All the physical and spiritual suffering she experienced is reflected in her art. Obsessed with her health and suffering, she created a pictorial body of work that is intense and emotional, which is explored in this course.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of Frida Kahlo’s work in the progression of great world art and its value to us today as a statement of the timeless human condition. Through the use of biographical and art historical textual materials, reproductions of paintings, and drawings, this course presents basic and detailed information on Frida Kahlo. The creative processes, historical context, and life of the artist are studied.
