Health Issues in the 21st Century provides the latest research on a variety of contemporary health issues, from promoting nutritional health to the medical effects of exercise. Course Description

Health is a complex and dynamic subject. It is almost impossible to stay abreast of current research and topics, even in the digital age, where medical and health information can come from both reliable and unreliable sources. As educators, it is our responsibility to provide our students with the most current and reliable health information available and teach skills that will help students determine which information is fact and which is fiction. This course offers the latest thinking on a variety of contemporary health issues, from promoting healthy behavior change to nutritional health to the medical effects of exercise. Other topics include stress and mental health, weight management, drugs and health, sexuality and relationships, preventing and fighting disease, and contemporary health hazards.

Goals

  • Become familiar with up-to-date information by presenting current data topics based on scientific evidence.
  • Become familiar with healthy behavior change.
  • Become familiar with how stress affects physical and mental health.
  • Recognize contemporary health issues.
  • Understand information regarding the prevention of disease.
  • Understand issues relating to the healthcare system and consumer health.
  • Understand the special challenges of obesity and weight loss.

Evidence of Learning Outcomes

Upon completing Health in the 21st Century, the student will have demonstrated knowledge of current health and health-related topics.  

How to Register

Health Issues in the 21st Century is completed in either an online or via emailed PDF format. It is open for anyone to register at any time during an open semester. After completion, students receive graduate, non-degree semester credit on official transcripts from the University of La Verne. 

Registration is fast and simple and can be done online or over the phone. Courses are offered on a rolling basis during three standard semesters, and you can begin whenever you are ready! Students may enroll in up to 15 credits each semester. The registration dates are: 

  • Fall: September 1 - January 31
  • Spring: February 1 - May 31
  • Summer: June 1 - August 31
