In this “journey to the past” with the great Dutch artist of the mid-1600s, the world of visual expression and emotion is explored. Through the use of biographical and art historical textual materials and reproductions of paintings in color and etchings in black-and-white, this course presents basic information on Rembrandt. The creative processes, historical context in which his art was produced, the life of the artist is studied. Emphasis is placed on the impact of other artist on Rembrandt’s work and the importance of Rembrandt’s work in the progression of great world art and its value to us today as a statement of the timeless human condition.
