Supporting Newcomer English Language Learners

Course #: EDUC_719M

Semester Credits: 3
Cost: $420.00

Imagine being a teen or preteen who has just moved to a new country. You walk into your new school, and it is vastly different from your old school. There are no familiar peers or teachers and no signage that you can comprehend. How would you feel? Being a newcomer English language learner can have unique challenges varying from student to student. This course examines case studies outlining what newcomers genuinely want and need in those first few months so that their transition is positive. Upper elementary, middle school, and high school educators will explore strategies to make academic content accessible for these students while also keeping social-emotional and culturally responsive considerations in mind. Educators will design and work on two flexible projects that apply entirely to their teaching positions and circumstances. By the end of this course, educators will be equipped with knowledge, strategies, and tools to warmly welcome newcomer English learners to their educational settings.
