Designing Learning for the Common Core

Course #: EDUC_717K

Semester Credits: 3
Cost: $420.00

This course begins with an overview of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and then maps out the strategies for powering and unwrapping the standards, creating pacing guides and
proficiency scales, and designing unit plans. With the CCSS, teachers need a new skill set to design learning for student mastery of the standards and to prepare students to be college and career ready. Moving away from traditional teaching practices to a different instructional approach is not easy. It will require grit on the part of teachers to venture into new methods of "learning design." However, the end result will be a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when the outcomes produce student mastery. This course is equally important for teachers of Social Studies, Science, and Technical subjects, as they, too, will be responsible for the reading and writing standards connected to their curriculum. This course offers K-12 teachers, and anyone else needing to understand Common Core, a variety of best practices and classroom delivery techniques for student mastery of the new standards.
