This course presents material about the life and work of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), a contender for the title of the most widely known European artist. Familiar and beloved the world over, the art of van Gogh is imbued with emotion, whether the subject is landscape, portraiture, still life or scenes from everyday life. Material is presented which allows us to interpret van Gogh's work in relation to the details of his difficult life but in addition, to explain why his art remains so enduring and compelling to so many. The glimpse into the body of work that van Gogh achieved exists in the context of the complex spirituality, multiple literary and visual association, and sense of time and place that enrich his art. Van Gogh has enabled us to see the world in a new way through the intensity of active surfaces and brilliant colors.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of Vincent van Gogh's work in the progression of great world art and its value to us today as a statement of the indomitable human spirit. Through the use of biographical and art historical textual materials, letters to his brother, reproductions of paintings, drawings, and in a video presentation - this course presents basic and detailed information on Vincent van Gogh.

b. Develop specific criteria for individuals or groups to assess and critique Van Gogh's works of art.
c. Identify and describe the ways that Van Gogh used to convey color and emotion in his art.

e. Identify major works of art by Van Gogh and describe the impact of those works on society.
f. Develop a theory about the artist's intent using reasoned statements to support personal opinions.
g. Construct an interpretation of works of art based on the form and content of the art.
